Seek & Destroy (Hetfield/Ulrich)
If Metallica is performing "Seek & Destroy" live some parts of the vocals are handled
by Jason. And James is holding the microphone to the fans to hear them screaming
"Seek & Destroy". Their first demo "No Life 'Till Leather" included this song.
Album:
Kill 'Em All
Lyrics - Song board
The song live:
Sometimes Jason is taking over the vocals during the live performance of that song.
The inspiration:
James said that the idea for "Seek & Destroy" originates from a Diamond Head song called "Dead Reckoning".
The subject matter:
It is just about somebodies who want to start an unfounded fight. So that song is just written about the exact opposite of "Wasting My Hate".
Metallica about "Seek & Destroy"
James Hetfield: The idea of "Seek" came from a Diamond Head song called "Dead
Reckoning". I used to work in a sticker factory in L.A., and I wrote that riff in my truck
outside work. This was our first experience in a real studio. I used a white Flying V,
which was the only guitar I had back then. I still have the guitar in storage. The song
is based around a one-note riff that was up a little higher. Though most of my riffs are
in E, that one worked off an A.
Kirk Hammett: We didn't have a big budget, and everything on that album was
rushed. When I listen to my lead now, I hear a lot of out-of-tunes notes. Like a bend
that just didn't make it and went right over my head because I was so overwhelmed with
being in the studio. I used my black Flying V with an old '57 humbucker, which I've had
for 12 years now. I plugged in through James's modified Marshall amp, mainly because we
didn't have a lot of equipment at that time. I also used a boss distortion pedal. (source: GuitarWorld issue of '91)
